As technology evolves and career paths shift, the skilled trades—especially welding—are facing a pivotal moment. With experienced welders retiring and fewer young people entering the profession, the industry is grappling with a growing skills gap. But within this challenge lies a powerful opportunity: to rethink how we inspire, educate, and support the next generation of welders.
Welding is often seen through an outdated lens—gritty, hazardous, and old-fashioned. In reality, it’s a cutting-edge, creative, and indispensable trade that fuels industries from aerospace to renewable energy. To attract fresh talent, we need to rebrand welding as a modern, respected, and fulfilling career. That means highlighting the artistry involved, the innovation of robotic welding and the vital role welders play in shaping the infrastructure of the future.
Inspiring the next generation isn’t just about education—it’s about representation. Welding has traditionally been male dominated, but that’s changing. Across the UK and beyond, more women are entering the field, proving that skill, precision and passion know no gender.
Historically, societal norms and limited access to training kept many women out of skilled trades. Today, inclusive education programs and targeted outreach are opening doors. Initiatives like WorldSkills UK and Women in Welding events hosted by training providers such as CATCH are breaking down barriers and sparking interest among young women.
A standout moment came during the regional finals of the WorldSkills UK Welding Competition, where female welders won 4 out of the 11 contests. Among them was Abbie Duffield, an apprentice at CATCH, who earned her place in the National Final this November.
Sponsored by Air Products, the WorldSkills UK Welding Competition is a prestigious event that celebrates the UK’s top young welding talent. It challenges apprentices and trainees at Level 2–3 or higher across three core welding processes: MMA, MAG, and TIG.
Stephen Haymes, Director of Engineering Skills Competitions, praised this year’s competitors:
“One of the real highlights this year? The brilliant performance from our female welders, many of whom outshone their male counterparts. It’s great to see the industry becoming more diverse and inclusive.”
CATCH, a leading training centre for the process, engineering and energy sectors in Humber, Yorkshire, and Lincolnshire, played a key role in this year’s regional finals. Not only did they host two full days of competition, but they also supported a strong team of apprentices—two of whom, including Abbie, advanced to the national finals.
CATCH also hosted its second Women in Welding event in June, building on the success of its inaugural session. Sponsored by Air Products, the event aims to inspire and empower female students to explore welding as a viable and rewarding career.
Jemma McCafferty, an Applications Specialist and qualified welder at Air Products, shared her journey with attendees, offering insights into the industry and her experience as a woman in engineering. Her story helped shine a light on the diverse opportunities available in welding today.

At the heart of these initiatives is our “Inspiring the Next Generation” campaign. Through strong partnerships with colleges and training providers, Air Products supports education with a comprehensive package that includes:
This hands-on support brings real-world industry experience into the classroom, helping students and apprentices connect with the trade in meaningful ways.
Welding is more than a job—it’s a craft, a science and a cornerstone of modern industry. By investing in education, embracing innovation and championing diversity, we can ignite a passion for welding in the next generation. As more women enter the field, the industry becomes stronger, more inclusive and more innovative.
The sparks we ignite today will forge a skilled, diverse workforce ready to shape the future of engineering and manufacturing.
